Phu Quoc Night Market - The Best Night Market We Have Been To!

The Phu Quoc Night Market

We have been to quite a few markets in our time and we have to say that the Phu Quoc night market is probably the best either of us has ever been to. It gets this quite prestigious title by being a great place to chill, buy reasonably priced goods, eat and experience the local culture all in one place. All with the benefit of not being accosted into tourist traps at all!

So, it goes without saying that we recommend visiting the Phu Quoc night market but read this guide fully to find out all the information that you could possibly need.

Best Time To Visit The Phu Quoc Night Market

The opening times for the Phu Quoc night market are;

  • Monday: 3 pm – 11.30 pm
  • Tuesday: 3 pm – 11.30 pm
  • Wednesday: 3 pm – 11.30 pm
  • Thursday: 3 pm – 11.30 pm
  • Friday: 3 pm – 11.30 pm
  • Saturday: 3 pm – 11.30 pm
  • Sunday: 3 pm – 11.30 pm

I had to say that the market starts at 3 pm because there are stalls at that time selling produce. However, this really is not the whole market and REALLY isn’t the experience you get from going in the evening.

Unofficially I would say that the actual time is 6 pm – 11 pm and I would suggest getting there at 8 pm. This is when the Phu Quoc night market really is in full swing and you will make the most of your evening.

Also, these kinds of markets are always going to be busier on the weekends and I think that adds to the vibe. If you agree then try to go on Saturday as I think this is the best day of the week to visit. If not then any weekday is going to be slightly quieter.

Where Is The Phu Quoc Night Market

The market itself is situated in the main town of Duong Dong. This town is easily accessible from anywhere on the island. The entrance and walking route around the market are in the map below.

How To Get There

If you are staying in Duong Dong then I highly recommend you walk as the traffic will be terrible in the evening. If you are a little further away (like we were) I recommend you download the Grab app (android/apple) and get a taxi from wherever you are. The price is pretty good and we had a lot of success with it.

Pro Tip

Quite a few of the Grab drivers in Phu Quoc casually told us to cancel the trip and tried to charge us more money. This ‘casualness’ is to try to make you think it is normal, it isn’t. Don’t let them charge you more or cancel your trip.

What To Buy At The Phu Quoc Night Market

There is a pretty good range of stuff but here are a few of the best things to look for.

  • Jewellery: There are a lot of jewellery stands throughout the market selling pearls, rings, earrings, etc. This is actually a pretty good place to look for this as most of them have the prices out already and, as this is a local market, the prices are reasonable straight off the bat.
  • Dresses: I could’ve put clothing here but I really think Vietnam shines for the quality and range of off-the-shelf dresses you can find at markets like this. Jade is 6’1″ so she didn’t have much luck but if you are average height and love dresses then you’ll be in your element/
  • Food: You can buy all sorts of dried meats and fish, nuts and other food at the stalls but I think the best food can be found in the numerous restaurants and bars throughout the whole market.
  • Souvenirs: As you can imagine, there are plenty of souvenir stalls a little further into the market where you can pick up the normal sort of fridge magnets, locally produced nick nacks and the like.

Jade also says in the video that it’s a really good place to buy things like snorkelling equipment so if you have not brought your own then this might be a good time to have a look.

If you’re looking for a snorkel kit then check out this Greatever mask and snorkel. We have been on so many snorkel and boat tours where the snorkel hire was dreadful and it ruins the experience. If you have room then definitely take your own set. Take a look at our recommended kit here.

Food & Drink

There are a few street food vendors as you walk around the market but If you are looking for a proper meal there are also loads of restaurants (especially seafood) dotted around the whole market.

These restaurants tend to have a lot of their produce at the front in a stall where you choose your meal and they then cook it and bring it to your table. I recommend going a little further into the market as the stalls tend to get a little cheaper than the ones at the very start.

There are as many bars as there are restaurants and you’ll easily be able to find a drink as you walk the Phu Quoc night market. There are so many bars that it is not unheard of for the market to still be open at around 2-3 am the next morning.

Top Tips For The Phu Quoc Night Market

  • Belongings: The Phu Quoc night market is extremely busy. This means that there may be people looking to pickpocket you, like anywhere else in the world. Just be aware of this as you walk around and make good choices with your belongings.
  • Weather: The Phu Quoc night market is very open so if it is raining hard it will take away from some of the enjoyment. See if you can plan your trip during a dry period.
  • Have Dinner: There are so many food options at the Phu Quoc night market that you should definitely not eat before going. The prices are pretty reasonable to so don’t expect to get ripped off.
  • Bartering: Bartering is always a good thing to try if you are not happy with the price of something. Too many people try to barter for the sake of it. If you’re happy then go for it, if you’re not, come down until you are happy or walk away. Simple.
  • Time There: I recommend spending a couple of hours at the Phu Quoc night market. If you are planning to have a big dinner and maybe some drinks afterwards then give yourself 3 hours.

What To Pack

Here are a few items that we think are super important when visiting the Phu Quoc night market. We have also included some packing essentials and some items that are important for Vietnam as a whole.

For city exploring and shorter hikes, you’ll need a decent day pack. We recommend one like Osprey’s Arcane, as not only can it hold a 15″ laptop, water bottle and everything else you would need day to day but it is also incredibly stylish (we think). We have used Osprey for loads of different bags over the years and they have all been perfect. Check out the Osprey Arcane on Amazon here.

Using a fanny pack is a love-hate kind of deal. Some people absolutely swear by them and others wouldn’t be seen dead in them. Jade and I have different opinions on them so that makes for interesting days out! Either way, if you are a lover then check out the MAXTOP Large Crossbody Fanny Pack as it is really affordable and can be worn in different positions depending on your style. Check it out in more detail here.

Jade really doesn’t get on well with flip-flops so she always takes a couple of pairs of sandals (in case one pair breaks) on every trip we go on. We recommend checking out these CUSHIONAIR sandals which are comfortable, durable and affordable (the holy trinity!). We chose these because they are vegan suede but there are lots of different materials and colours to choose from. Check them out here!

If you’re worried about your devices losing power throughout the day then we recommend the Anker 10,000mAh power bank. Anker actually makes quite a few power banks but this one comes with a USB-C and USB-A port which means that you’ll be able to charge any of your devices regardless of connection. The 10,000mAh capacity is enough to completely charge an iPhone 12 twice so you should be good for a number of days with this beast. Have a look at the price here.

Other Things To Do In Phu Quoc

The Phu Quoc night market is pretty good but it’s not the only thing this incredible island has to offer! Take a look at these other activities for even more things to do in Phu Quoc.

Snorkelling/Waterpark Trip

We went on a three-island snorkelling trip whilst were in Phu Quoc which was fantastic. We went to a couple of snorkelling spots and also got dropped off at the large Pineapple island in the south. This is where the huge waterpark is and where the world-famous Phu Quoc cable car goes. We travelled back on the cable car so it was a brilliant 1-day excursion including so many activities.

Check out the exact tour we went on here!

Water Park

As mentioned above, the south island has a world-class water park and is easily a full day’s activity for families and anyone who loves water parks (like me). When I say world-class, Sun World waterpark really delivers. It is one of the best waterparks I have ever been to so definitely check it out here.

Starfish Beach

We, unfortunately, went to starfish beach a the wrong end of the season and the water was dark and green. This meant that the only starfish we saw were a few unfortunate ones that had washed up on the shore and died. Check out how to actually enjoy Starfish Beach here.

Starfish Beach Phu Quoc - Worth It In The Low Season?

Nevertheless, it is a great place to go to see the starfish in the crystal clear water and grab something to eat on the large piers that go out into the sea. It’s very secluded so I recommend getting your grab to stay for the duration of your visit so you have a taxi home.

They will offer to do this as it saves them time and money and guarantees them a pretty decent fair in the other direction.

Beach Day

The beaches in Phu Quoc are considered to be some of the best in all of Vietnam so you simply have to get a few beach days in whilst you are there. I recommend checking out Bai Truong (Long Beach) in the south but there are plenty of others to have a look at.

Check out this article for more information about Phu Quoc’s beaches.

Cable Car

I mentioned the cable car above but didn’t really go into much detail about this insane bit of engineering. The Pho Quoc cable car is an 8km marvel that towers over the sea and small islands to the south.

I am not so good with heights but I managed to go through it and it was absolutely incredible.
