Gozo is an underrated gem in the Mediterranean Sea, just north of the coast of mainland Malta. Until we arrived in Malta, I had never heard of Gozo but since visiting it has become a firm favourite.
Not only are there incredible beaches in Gozo, but stunning cliffs, mesmerising architecture, amazing diving opportunities and definitely some gorgeous accommodation options.
Sometimes, it is nice to feel welcomed and at home when you’re on a trip abroad, and that’s what Gozo does best.

What To Expect From A Boutique Hotel In Gozo
There are so many different types of accommodation available now that it is easy to get confused with the different definitions!
Put simply though, a boutique hotel is an accommodation with all of the amenities of a hotel, without the hoards of people and with the personable feel of a guesthouse. They’re often family-run or have a wonderful story behind the building you stay in.
It’s perfect for people wanting access to daily breakfasts, room service and housekeeping, but not wanting to get up at 6 am to reserve a sunbed or be surrounded by bland decor.
Not all boutique hotels fit every category, but most are small, stylish and charming. They don’t tend to be big recognisable chains, and guest service is usually highly rated because the staff can focus better on fewer guests.

Boutique places are usually decorated with a little more detail than a typical hotel – think cutesy themes, aesthetic character and unique furnishings. Often, these details will represent the country or city the hotel is located in, which makes it all the more exciting!
One problem with a boutique hotel in Gozo is that because they are small, they are often booked up quite early with no room for extra guests! If you are looking to find somewhere a little special, then make sure you do your research months before you plan to visit and book your room early.
With booking.com, there are often options to ‘book now, pay later’ or ‘book now with free cancellation’ so I would highly recommend doing this to guarantee your room and then you can be flexible with dates later on if you need to be.

Where To Stay On Gozo Island
If you need a bit more time and research before being ready to book your accommodation, identify with one of the categories below and we can dive in deeper to find the best place for you to stay!
Gozo may be small, but there are huge differences between the towns so you’ll need to pick where to stay carefully.
The island is easy to get around (especially if you hire a car) but being based in the best area for you is going to make your holiday that little easier, and that’s what it’s all about!
Whether you’re looking for budget rooms, luxury apartments or something in between, you’ll find a location with a boutique hotel in Gozo that fits your needs!
If You Are A Backpacker
Backpackers are usually focused on two things – fun and how much they can have on a budget! Sure, in Malta you won’t find a bed for €2 like in Southeast Asia, but you can get some gorgeous rooms for low prices relative to usual European costs.
Victoria is a great place for backpackers as there are a lot of accommodation options there which means competitive prices. It’s not as close to the beaches but if you hire a cheap car then you could really stay anywhere.
If You Are A Sun Lounger
Are you planning on spending most of your time outside in the baking sun? Then you’ll need a pool, loungers, and probably some excellent cocktail menus! You might also want a change of scenery so grab your towel and head to the beach to laze the days away.
Luckily for you, Gozo boasts plenty of beautiful beaches to choose from. Stay in Nadur to have great access to Ramla Bay for the best sand + swimming, with San Blas coming up a close second.
If You Are A Couple
Gozo is the perfect spot for a romantic getaway. We should know – we got engaged on the island! Staying near a perfect sunset viewpoint is an obvious choice for a romantic trip, so I’d recommend booking your accommodation on the west coast if you want to catch the gorgeous skies!
Locations like Dwejra Bay and Xlendi are popular for this reason, and the nearby towns of Santa Lucijia and Gharb offer wonderful hotel choices.
If You Are A Family With Children
The island is a lovely place to bring the whole family.
The pretty town of Xaghra is a great place to base yourself as it is close to the beach at Ramla Bay, as well as having some interesting historical monuments situated in the district itself.
If You Are A Person With A Physical Impairment
If you’re coming from Malta, then you’ll know that the islands aren’t particularly accessibility friendly. Steep hills and uneven pavements regularly limit most holidaymakers, so if you are someone who uses a wheelchair or else finds it difficult to walk then you’ll need to think carefully about where you’re spending most of your time.
Marsalforn is definitely the flattest area of Gozo and has plenty to keep you entertained. Enjoy the beach, the promenade and the great accommodation options here.

Victoria
The capital of Gozo Island is a stunning city, full of fascinating history, gorgeous architecture and excellent restaurants.
Named after the British Queen Victoria for her golden jubilee, the city is actually called Citta’ ir-Rabat (not to be confused with Rabat on the mainland).
Surprisingly for a capital city, Victoria has some wonderful winding streets that you can get lost in. There are cafes, restaurants and wine bars galore, along with hole-in-the-wall snack places and stalls.
Make sure you take the time to visit the Citadel of course – you won’t be disappointed!
Victoria is a great place for shopping, socialising and discovering the history of Gozo. It’s a little far from the coast so if you want a beach swim every morning, perhaps it’s not the place for you.
I’d recommend staying here if you want plenty to do to fill your days and a busy nightlife too. It’s also the most central town, with easy access to everywhere else on Gozo.
Xaghra
Xaghra is a lovely place to stay if you want quick access to the beaches, but also want the picturesque charm of a Gozitan town!
There are some hugely important historical sites here, including the UNESCO World Heritage Ggantija temple complex – there are stones here that are almost 6000 years old!
Xaghra has a beautiful town square with some great restaurants (we highly recommend Al Sale – but definitely go hungry because portions are enormous!), but it is a small town so stay here if you are in Gozo for more than a few days.
The roads can be incredibly steep though so take extra care in your rental car!
Gharb
This tiny town sits on the west of the island, and it’s perfect for travellers who are interested in local life and artisan crafts.
The famous Ta’Dbiegi crafts village lies just south of Gharb, where you can not only purchase beautifully handcrafted lace, glass and pottery but watch it being made too!
If you’re interested in diving, then I’d recommend staying here because it’s super close to the Inland Sea diving site, so you can easily get there nice and early to start your dive.
Xlendi
Xlendi is a sleepy resort town with plenty of restaurants, cafes and bars, with the added bonus of a gorgeous swimming spot!
The beach is limited – on the day that we went the water was actually so high, it was hitting the restaurant gazebo windows! There is a tiny shingle area where you might be able to lay down on a towel on a good day, but it’s better to just be in the water here! Xlendi is a great place to swim, snorkel or dive.
You can take some gorgeous scenic walks along the cliffs here, so stay nearby if you’re a nature lover!
Marsalforn
Marsalforn is a pretty place that gets livelier as the summer months go on. It’s got easy access to a variety of beaches – the sandy bay in Marsalforn itself is nice enough to spend a day in, but you can also reach Ramla Bay, Xwejni and San Blas within 20 minutes.
Stay in Marsalforn if you want plenty of beach days!
You can also dive here – and you can choose from a great range of diving schools so don’t feel like you only have one option.
Nadur
Stay in Nadur if you don’t want to do much travelling around Gozo! It’s close to the ferry terminal, there are beautiful beaches nearby and some fantastic views of the rest of the island.
Like most of these towns, Nadur is quiet and relaxed. There are lots of accommodation options but you don’t get a hugely touristy feel – mainly because it’s not set on the coastline which is where most holidaymakers tend to base themselves.
